The Springer Children’s Theatre is proud to offer a sensory-friendly performance for each of its three performances this season. Sensory-friendly performances are designed especially for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, sensory sensitivities, or other disabilities. During these programs, patrons enjoy shows together with family and friends in welcoming, inclusive, and relaxed spaces. Facilities also provide environmental modifications intended to make the experience of viewing a performance more pleasant for everyone. Theatre lighting and sound will be softened, and the house lights will dim but stay on. Patrons will also have more relaxed audience seating, and a quiet room adjacent to the theatre will be available. While these performances will have slight modifications in consideration of the audience, the performance itself will not be condensed.
Director of Education, Sally Baker, is excited about the new addition to the Children’s Theatre line-up and hopes that this is just the beginning of sensory-friendly performances offered at the Springer. “The Springer Children’s Theatre and Academy have a long history of being inclusive programs,” states Baker. “Incorporating sensory-friendly performances represents the next step in that inclusivity. By making slight adjustments to our 1-hour children’s theatre performances such as introducing audiences to production elements before the show, keeping the house lights up a little brighter and softening loud sounds and surprise elements, we can make live theatre a little more enjoyable for audience members with sensory sensitivity. Our community partners at the Autism Learning Center and Autism Hope Center are helping us provide resources for a high-quality theatrical experience.”
