From the Director’s Chair
Well, it has been a month since we closed SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN due to the COVID-19 shutdown order. I will admit it shook me up. I had never closed a show before. Ever.
After a certain period of complete disorientation, I've regained my footing and the Springer staff has turned its attention to the future. There are still a lot of questions about how and when the Springer will get back to full houses and standing ovations but we are theatre people and we know how to be agile, flexible and resourceful. It's times like this when the theatre needs those traits more than ever.
Civilization has been upended and new ways of living will gradually emerge. However, I fully expect that live theatre will play an essential role in society just as it has for 2600 years.
I’ve been running theatres for almost 44 years now and I thought I’d seen pretty much everything. It turns out I have one more lesson to learn and at least one more major service to provide the Springer Opera House.
I want you to know that I am committed to using all my creative powers to get us back in the groove and the Springer staff is chomping at the bit to get it done. The Springer Board of Directors continues to show that it is the best non-profit board in town and they, too, are up for the challenge.
At some point, the ban on public assembly will be lifted. When that happens, the Springer is going to be ready to deliver some jaw-dropping theatre entertainment next season We will also have some new systems and procedures in place that will make the Springer a safe and healthy environment for you, your family and your friends. By the time you come back to the Springer, you can do so with confidence. Just relax and enjoy the show like you always have!
Please be patient with us as we sail these uncharted waters together. I want you to know that I love you and miss you and cannot wait to share some new theatrical surprises with you!
